Red Lodge Clay Center- Short Term Resident September 2024
Sarah Divita is a Richmond-based artist specializing in ceramics who graduated with a BFA in Craft and Material Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her journey into ceramics began during her formative years, where she was entranced by the medium’s tactile allure and its’ unique ability to transcend the physical, giving shape to her innermost thoughts, emotions, and concepts. As an instructor at Clayground LLC for the past three years, she has become a highly regarded member of her small community of makers. She teaches classes of all levels, including specialty workshops such as cake piping slip onto ceramic surfaces.
Currently, she is working at Odyssey Clayworks in Asheville, North Carolina as a studio assistant. Residing in the vibrant North Carolina clay community, she is finding herself at home surrounded by like-minded creatives, helping to foster the types of communal art spaces she hopes to remain in for years to come.
I utilize clay as a means to tap into the visceral and conjure feelings of divine pleasure. My imagery is primarily derived from niche Internet subculture, married with mythological motifs and symbolism. The ritual objects I create allude to a sense of hedonism, which acts as a direct link to the sensation of religious ecstasy. Human desire transcends what is bound to the physical body and serves as a direct connection to the divine. Clay is an archival medium that binds my sculptures to something ancient and collectively felt.
