April Adewole, a native of Compton, California, brings a touch of the ocean’s mystery, divine femininity and a dash of dark humor to her ceramic creations. Inspired by the ebb and flow of tidal spaces, reforging ancestral lines and an unapologetic love of color, April’s work is where the illusion of simplicity meets functionality. Her pieces invite you to touch and eat on art.
In the depths of history and the ocean’s embrace, I find my muse. My pottery is born from the desire to create pieces that appear washed ashore, perfect in purpose yet scarred by their journey. Inspired by the textures of seashells and the organic growth of life forms clinging to each other, my work pays homage to traditional African pottery and countless ideas lost to the sea during the slave trade. Each piece is a testament to post-trauma survival, finding beauty amid damage and scar tissue. Through my art, I aim to reclaim joy from intergenerational wounds, transforming pain into objects of profound resilience, purpose and elegance.
