Eligibility: Short-Term Residencies generally occur between September 1 – May 1, annually. Please note, summer months (May – August) are reserved for AIA Groups. The Short-Term Residency is ideal for ceramic artists seeking to invest in their personal studio practice, complete a special project, or that simply need uninterrupted time to work in a well-equipped Studio with a supportive community environment. We accept applications from individuals at least 18 years of age or older with non-academic backgrounds, students and/or post-academic individuals, professional artists, and educators for residency periods lasting 2-12 weeks. Acceptance to the program is dependent on evident and developed  skill in an applicants work, the ability of individuals to be self-directed with prior experience and knowledge about ceramic processes, as well as the availability of requested dates of attendance.  If you would like to learn more about our program, please visit the “Past Short-Term Residents” page to get a sense of the artists that have been accepted in prior years.

Scholarships are available for qualified candidates that identify as BIPOC or LGBTQ. Funding may be used towards residency fees and travel. Lodging & Studio:
We provide a fully furnished, well-appointed house with private rooms and a large kitchen that is close to Red Lodge’s amenities; restaurants, grocery store, etc. Our studio facility (Fox Studio) is well-equipped with numerous types of kilns, a slab roller, extruder, throwing wheels, clay mixer, sand-blaster, spray-booth, and wood shop. Short-term residents will be responsible for Residency Fees, all travel and personal living expenses, as well as material and firing expenses. Keep in mind that the Studio facility is 6 miles north of Resident Housing and residents will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the studio. Note: Guests are allowed for up to 6 days to stay in the same room as a short term resident artist, at the rate of $25 per dayNo guests are allowed access to work in the studio facilities, but can visit the facilities.

For wood firing Guests: Guests invited to fire the wood kiln with an accepted short term resident will be charged a flat rate of $25 per day which will cover housing accommodations, studio access fees and administrative fees (regardless of whether they are staying in our provided housing accommodations or not). Studio access includes use of facilities but wood fire guests are not provided a working space and are subject to terms outlined in their contracts.  A minimum of 3 wood fire guests are required to safely fire the train kiln. Prior to the start of the residency,  the list of woodfire guest artists must be approved by Executive Director.

Application Requirements:
All applications will need to be submitted online through our slideroom portal (see link at top of page). In order to apply to the STR Program you will need the following;
– Letter of Intent/Residency Proposal
– Artist’s Statement
– Resume
– Up to 15 images of current work (minimum 10)
– 3 References (name, phone, and email contact)
– $40 application fee payable through Slideroom.

HURRICANE RELIEF SHORT TERM RESIDENCY INFORMATION

Hearing about how so many artists who have been displaced from the recent natural disasters (Hurricane Helene and Milton), we would like to open our communal short-term residency space for these dates (ONLY): November 6th-December 16th, 2024 to anyone affected by these events.

Eligibility:
Anyone who has lost a studio space &/or possible revenue due to the recent natural disasters- this could be folks who live in the south east, or artists who were planning to come to an artist residency, or other practice related opportunity in this location that was canceled due to these events. We can accommodate up to 5 artists for this residency relief block.

Benefits:
– Waived Residency/ Housing Fees (valued at $45.00 per day) for the duration of the following dates: November 6th-December 16th, 2024. Please note, we are not able to accommodate purposed short term residency dates outside of this window.
-24/7 studio access
– private bedroom in a shared short-term house located in Red Lodge, Montana

Residents are responsible for:
– Travel fees, living expenses during their residency, material/firing fees (charged “at cost”) and transportation to/from the studio. NOTE: our studio is 6 miles from the living accommodations that are in town, and residents are responsible for their own transportation. We recommend bringing your own vehicle or renting one from the Billings Airport ( approx. 60 miles away from Red Lodge).

*All artists will be required to sign a short term contract, a hold/harmless agreement & a short term lease, as well as pay a $150 refundable deposit to secure their Relief residency dates. This deposit will be refunded after the residency, upon inspection of studio space and housing, and made sure that all keys have been returned. We asked that you promptly complete and sign your docusign contract packet as soon as it is sent.
